Here you have a few choices. Linen or cotton. Linen is the best of the best. Oil primed Linen canvases are intended for oil paintings and they are highly durable, lasting up to five times longer than cotton. As such they are more expensive than cotton. Cotton canvases are still great for the beginner as well as the professional and lend themselves well to acrylics as well as oils. The cotton pre-stretched canvases are usually primed so they are ready to paint, however you can choose to gesso them for a smoother finish.
Stretched canvases are constructed in two ways that need to be considered for your needs. Staples will either be on the sides or at the back. If you intend to remove your painting from the stretcher bars in order to frame it, the stapled sided canvas will be fine for your needs. If you would like to hang your painting on the wall without a frame, then the "Gallery wrapped" or "Exhibition Canvases" with the staples in the back, are the ones you'll need.
